The Truth About Caffeine and Weight Loss

Not all caffeine is the same and caffeine is getting a bad reputation lately. Skinny Stomach Wraps would like to set the record straight on caffeine and weight loss. For generations and across the globe, tired humans have used natural and synthetic forms of caffeine for a quick “pick-me-up” and for weight loss. Often, quick fix – caffeine infused weight loss has led to serious health risks. It is time we look at the difference between natural and synthetic stimulants and choose healthier ways to stay alert and avoid extra pounds!

Thanks to science, over the last 120 years, we have seen a shift in what is considered healthy weight. For centuries extra weight, the buxom woman, was considered a healthy survivor. The thin were thought to be sick, frail, week, and poor but well up into the mid-1800’s a heavy woman was considered to be a healthier woman.  It meant she ate well and was accustom to “society” and “money”. Then a shift occurred around 1860 and the pursuit of a thinner silhouette lead to women trying almost anything to lose weight. Spas opened with women and men paying a fortune to experience the latest in weight loss. These diet, exercise and treatment programs were more like experimental torture providing few immediate results. Believe it or not, some “doctors” were prescribing soda as a weight loss drug. One of the primary boosting ingredients for many early soda recipes was cocaine and when large quantities were consumed the “patient” would lose appetite and therefore lose weight. Products that contained cocaine (caffeine weight loss) became a popular diet option.

From the 1860’s to the 1920’s, researchers and scientist worked on the correlation between stimulants and weight loss in an effort to establish an effective “quick-fix” solution. The first synthetically enhanced caffeinating drugs (amphetamines) were distributed in the 1930’s and quickly became popular due to the longer lasting boost of energy AND extremely fast weight loss (without extensive exercise or diet). The caffeine induced weight lose craze picked up, but doctors discovered there were serious health risks; seeing more and more amphetamine users falling victim to heart failure.  Doctors stopped prescribing amphetamines for energy and weight loss and researchers continued to work on a solution.

In the early 1970’s a Danish physician, looking for a medicinal relief for asthma, combined caffeine and synthetic ephedrine and gave it to his patients. Not to long after it was discovered that patients not only experienced improved breathing but also a boost in energy and weight loss. The caffeine and ephedrine combo was called Ephedra and classified as an herb, which is important since, as an herbal supplement, it was not subject to the jurisdiction of any governmental pharmaceutical regulations. Ephedra was released to the public over-the-counter and labeled a weight loss supplement.  By the mid 1990’s, the FDA was forced to declare Ephedra and similar synthetic combinations (Phenylpropanolamine, Fen-Phen…) unsafe and production was discontinued due to multiple reports of cardiovascular and neurological problems, hemorrhagic stroke and increased hypertension.

Yes, even natural caffeine has its downsides. When too much is consumed, it can cause anxiety, insomnia, an increase in blood pressure, or adrenal stress, but the amount required to produce this type of reaction is much more than a smaller amount of synthetic caffeine. You could drink 3 cups of coffee a day for a year and you might experience insomnia, but take 4 Fen-Phen every day for a month and you could have cardiovascular and neurological problems.  Combine the 4 pills with 3 cups of coffee and you could have a heart attack! The problem is that synthetic caffeine absorbs faster through the digestive system, causing a quicker spike — and a more sudden crash as well. If this history lesson has taught us nothing else, it has shown us the synthetic stimulants combined with natural caffeine can cause all kinds of issues ranging from extreme jitters to heart and kidney failure.

FACT: Energy boosters (Red Bull, Monster, 5 Hour Energy, and most soda…) and prescription weight loss drugs are made with synthetic caffeine powder, which is extremely concentrated.  One tablespoon of this powder equals the amount of caffeine naturally found in about 50 cups of coffee.  SCARY FACT: One tablespoon of pure caffeine powder can be fatal for an adult. And in 2011, energy drinks caused more than 20,000 U.S. emergency room visits.

So what can you do when your caffeine and weight loss options are almost all synthetic? Skinny Stomach Wraps suggests you try a truly natural solution like ENERGY and moderate exercise to get you started on a healthier you.  Natural caffeine (coffee beans, tea leaves, Yerba Matte and a number of other plants) has been found to provide a number of health benefits.
