Ketosis With It Works!

Achieving a state of ketosis is not as simple as just cutting carbs in your diet; it can take some work and planning. To understand a bit more about what we mean by Ketosis – when your body is in a state of ketosis, fat is being converted to compounds known as ketones, using them as a main source of energy. By cutting carb intake, the glycogen is reduced and insulin levels go down, allowing fatty acids to be released from the fat stores in the body. The liver converts some of the fatty acids into the ketone bodies acetone, acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate, which can then be used as fuel by portions of the brain. As a general rule, by limiting your carb intake to 20–50 net grams per day, you will lower your blood sugar and insulin levels, leading to the release of stored fatty acids that your liver then converts into ketones.

Including coconut oil into your diet will help you to achieve a state of Ketosis. Coconut oil contains healthy fats called medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which unlike most other fats, are quickly absorbed by the body and go directly to the liver, converting into ketones for instant energy. There are four types of MCTs in coconut oil, but 50% of it comes from lauric acid, which is believed by some researchers to produce a more sustained level of Ketosis because it metabolizes at a slower rate than other MCTs. Start adding coconut oil to your diet slowly to avoid cramping or diarrhea; a teaspoon a day, working up to two or three teaspoons a day over a two-week period is recommended.
